Bird Protection AND Capercaillie
Haute-Garonne Montagne deploys innovative systems dedicated to bird protection across its 3 resorts: Luchon-Superbagnères, Le Mourtis, and Bourg-d’Oueil to eliminate the risks of collision with overhead cables and prevent any potential incidents. These systems are designed to ensure the safety of birds, whether they are migratory such as cranes, wild geese, or storks, and endemic species like vultures, bearded vultures, or kites. For a harmonious coexistence between human activities and the local avian fauna.
The Luchon-Superbagnères ski resort collaborates with state services (ONF, OFB, etc.) and local associations dedicated to nature preservation to ensure the flourishing of the majestic Capercaillie, or Black Grouse, in dedicated areas of its ski domain. Educational panels raise awareness among skiers, hikers, and mountain bikers not to disturb this vulnerable species during winter and throughout summer (breeding season). Additionally, the resort plants endemic tree and grass species, crucial elements of the Capercaillie’s ecosystem, thus demonstrating a tangible commitment to preserving this icon of the Pyrenees.
Pastoralism
Haute-Garonne Montagne works closely with local breeders to offer welcoming and safe pastures. Herds of cows and sheep, accompanied by their herders and shepherds, continue to shape the mountain landscape as their ancestors have done for generations. Moreover, the direct sale of exceptional products from these pastures is a tangible reality, reinforcing our commitment to preserving traditions and the authentic quality of the Pyrenees.
Dismantling obsolete installations and Artificial Snow
Haute-Garonne Montagne is committed to dismantling obsolete installations that are not essential to the proper functioning of its ski resorts to maintain a measured human presence in the heart of this essential mountainous environment.
Our thoughtful and sustainable approach to artificial snow and the use of snow cannons translates into well-defined objectives that limit water and energy extraction while minimizing the impact on the surrounding nature. One of the most important aspects of our responsible approach is the extraction of water from the same watershed from which it is returned. We use water retention basins well known to lovers of the Pyrenees, such as the lake of OÔ. Snow cannons are activated selectively and based on actual needs, taking into account weather conditions, visitor levels, and the state of the snow cover. This careful planning allows the mountain to quickly return to its natural state after the winter season, without delaying spring flowering and without disturbing the local ecosystem.
